Lancer standouts Carly Steer and Pierce Johnson were honoured with the Banner and Olympic Shields as athletes of the year Tuesday at the Evening of Excellence, highlighting the accomplishments of UWindsor student-athletes.
Pierce established himself as one of the premier men’s volleyball players in the country, earning all-Canadian status while finishing second in Ontario University Athletics in hitting percentage, fourth in kills per set, and fifth in total points with 269.
Steer, in her final season as a guard on the Lancer women’s basketball team, became the OUA’s all-time leader in three-point shots made with a career total of 229. She also led the country in free-throw percentage, nailing 98 per cent of her attempts.
The DeMarco Awards, presented annually to the top female and male students who best combine academic achievement with athletic prowess, went to Bryce Philips from men’s soccer and Melanie Burgess from the women’s golf team.
Kyle Haas from men’s hockey and Keely Baggio from women’s soccer claimed the Captain's Trophy, for outstanding leadership on and off the field. Find a full list of award recipients at goLancers.ca.
