The Office of Open Learning is partnering with Saint Clair College, Lambton College, and eCampus Ontario to host an Open Education Summit on May 7 at the St Clair Centre for the Arts.
The Open Education Summit (#OES2018) is a forum for discussing, exploring, and sharing open, online, and technology enabled teaching and learning practices, research, and scholarship.
The event, which is free for UWindsor staff, faculty, and students, aims to bring together diverse voices from the university and college communities to share ideas, experiences, practices, and resources for open and online education.
The one-day summit will provide an opportunity to discuss and explore exciting emerging areas and questions in post-secondary education, including:
- What is open educational practice and pedagogy, and what does it mean for diversity, inclusivity, and access in our educational system?
- How are Open Educational Resources changing the educational landscape?
- How do you find, evaluate, adopt, adapt, create, and share open educational resources, including open textbooks?
- Diverse perspectives and voices on open and online education: Students, instructors, administrators
- Showcasing open and online pedagogies
- How are open educational resources related to other open initiatives – open research, open data, open government, open access, open source, etc.?
“Whether you are a seasoned open education practitioner, or just curious about open and online education, the day will have something for everyone,” says Nick Baker from the Office of Open Learning, who is one of the organizers.
“We are organizing a day that will showcase the great work of our instructors both in sharing their practices and their scholarship around their open and online teaching, provide practical workshops for people to explore things like open textbooks and open educational resources, which are available at no cost to students or instructors to use, and of course, some exciting and energising keynotes who will set the scene for the conversation.”
Rajiv Jhangiani, special advisor to the provost on open education and a psychology professor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, will deliver the opening keynote on serving access, equity, and innovation through open educational practices. Dr. Jhangiani is an open education and equity advocate and author of open textbooks. He and the organizers have committed to supporting and encouraging diversity in all aspects of the event, including ensuring sessions involve linguistically and culturally diverse presenters.
The organizers still have a limited number of spots available in the program for people willing to share their experiences, research, and scholarship around open and online education; see the call for proposals here: https://tinyurl.com/OES18-proposal-submission. The deadline for proposals is April 13 and more information can be found on the event website www.oesummit.ca.
