Music grad Philip Segiun (BMus 1986) recalls two different music buildings during his UWindsor studies: “the daytime one with classes and lessons, and the night-time one when a regular handful of keeners would stay all hours practising, rehearsing, and jamming.”

Now an instructor of classical trumpet at York University as well as a performer with the Stratford Festival and Windsor Symphony orchestras, he fondly recalls the building — now vacated in favour of the renovated Armouries downtown — as his workshop, community centre, and second home.

“Our School of Music may not have been the largest in Canada, but what we might have lacked in size, we benefited from in small class sizes, and the intimate and personal attention from our capable professors who demanded a high standard through hard work,” he says.

Seguin and his brother Michael Seguin (BMus 1983, B.Ed 1984, M.Ed 1997) will join fellow alumni Michael Stone (BMus 1985) and Ross Osmun (BSc 1991, BMus 1994, B.Ed 1995) as featured soloists in concert with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, January 27, at the Capitol Theatre.

The program for the Alumni Concerto Concert will encompass compositions from Antonio Vivaldi to Ludwig van Beethoven, and also will showcase current music students: clarinetist Emilian Cailean and pianist Bethany Russell, winners of the School of Creative Arts concerti competition.

• Trumpeter Michael Seguin, currently superintendent of education with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, has taught at the UWindsor Faculty of Education and School of Music;
• trombonist Stone teaches the instrument at the School of Creative Arts, is a member of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, and maintains an active freelance career;
• pianist Osmun is professor of piano and theory at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
