Workshop to help prospective music students prepare for audition

High school students interested in pursuing a music degree are invited to attend the School of Creative Arts’ audition workshop during the University’s open house on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Unlike many academic programs, music faculty not only look at a student’s academic achievement, they also want to hear them play their instrument or sing with an accompanist. Many students have no experience of auditioning and find it stressful.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide information on what schools of music are looking for in students and how to prepare for an audition and for academic music studies. Attendees will meet instructors and current students who are happy to answer questions.

Students can perform a mock audition and may have an informal interview with faculty. They may choose to perform or just be interviewed; one piece of music three to five minutes in length is appropriate.

Students with questions about preparing for their auditions should contact the School of Creative Arts by email soca@uwindsor.ca or phone 519-253-3000, ext. 2829.

The workshop presentation starts at 10 a.m. with mock audition individualized sessions to follow. To guarantee a spot, register on the SoCA Music website by Oct. 25.

SoCA Music will offer a second Audition Workshop on Saturday, Jan. 20.
