The University of Windsor will confer the title of Distinguished University Professor on two members of its faculty during Convocation celebrations Friday, Oct. 13.
The rank is awarded to senior scholars at the height of their careers who have distinguished achievements in teaching and whose scholarly activities reflect a body of work recognized at a national or international level.
Jonathan Wu is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and has been a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Automotive Sensors and Information Systems. He is the founding director of the Computer Vision and Sensing Systems Laboratory at the University of Windsor, Canada. Prior to joining the university, Dr. Wu was a senior research officer at the National Research Council of Canada. An elected fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, he has received the CIPPRS/ACTIRF Best Robotics Paper Award.
His research focuses on computer vision systems for active vehicle safety, driver assistance, and machine learning and sensor fusion for autonomous driving. He has published one book on 3D computer vision and more than 350 peer-reviewed papers, including 200 journal articles, in the areas of computer vision, machine learning, and intelligent systems.
Ahmet Alpas is a professor in mechanical, automotive, and materials engineering and has been Industrial Research Chair of NSERC and General Motors. Dr. Alpas is an internationally renowned leader in the development of lightweight materials and surface engineering.
He has received numerous national and international awards for collaborative research and industry partnerships, including the NSERC Synergy Award presented by the Governor General of Canada. Comprising more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, Alpas’ research has garnered more than 11,000 citations, driving advancements in material design, manufacturing technologies, and enhancing Canada's collaborative research and innovation capabilities.
