#2011-NU-24 ESL Instructor (Part-Time, 24 hours or less) – Temporary / Contract, Centre for English Language Development; January 11, 2012 to April 13, 2012 (five positions)

The Centre for English Language Development (CELD) has a variety of English language programs for second language learners. Our most significant program is the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP). The candidate will have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in TESL, Applied Linguistics, or Bachelor of Education with TESL Ontario or TESL Canada certification from a recognized institution. The candidate will have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and high standards in program delivery. It is essential for the candidate to be versatile and competent in teaching students at both a low-intermediate level of proficiency and high-intermediate level of proficiency. The candidate will possess familiarity with language acquisition theories and ESL teaching methodology and demonstrate an innovative and creative teaching spirit. It is necessary for the candidate to possess a high degree of cultural sensitivity and awareness of cross-cultural educational issues. In addition, the candidate will have an ability to understand the needs of and the challenges faced by international/second language students; the ability to deal effectively with a linguistically and culturally diverse student population; and demonstrated ability to work in a team-teaching environment involving instructors of diverse backgrounds. The candidate will have demonstrated ability to conform to program policies and regulations, including adhering to deadlines, submitting high quality work, following outlined procedures and meeting expectations. The candidate must be amenable to continuous professional development and contribution to the development of our programs. Proven experience in test design and formal assessment is expected. The ESL Instructor will have outstanding communication, interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills. This position requires a high degree of computer literacy, as technology is frequently incorporated into the class room. Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Lotus Notes is also expected.
