An online lecture Tuesday, Feb. 16, will discuss issues surrounding policing, accountability, and systemic racism in the criminal justice system.

Erick Laming, a doctoral student of criminology at the University of Toronto, will present “Stop Resisting: Understanding Police Use of Force and Accountability in Canada,” hosted by the Humanities Research Group on Zoom at 7 p.m.

Laming is a member of the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation; his research has explored police body-worn cameras, Indigenous policing, and police oversight structures. He co-authored a study for the Ontario Human Rights Commission, titled Use of force by the Toronto Police Service: Final Report, which concluded that police agencies must pursue the goal of reducing police use of force to improve relations with the community.

A question-and-answer period will follow the formal presentation.

Attendance is free and open to the public but registration in advance is required.
