Playing “Last Post” during a memorial ceremony at a local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion when she was in grade 10 launched Amanda Hanson’s career as a soloist.

“Since then, my confidence has grown,” says the trumpeter, a first-year music student in the School for Arts and Creative Innovation. “I am very passionate about all forms of music and I want to share this with others as much as I can, with the aspiration to become a music teacher.”

Hanson is one of eight top-scoring performance students who will compete for the Ron W. Ianni Memorial Scholarship during a recital Sunday, January 12. The $500 award honours the late UWindsor president.

Besides Hanson, the competitors include percussionist Meghan Chamberlain on marimba; vocalist Lisette Gagnon; saxophonist Amber Macleod; pianist Nadia Santoro; soprano Donja Jean Trivers; classical guitarist Daniel Turner; and soprano Elizabeth Zuwala.
