Varsity basketball to tip off season Wednesday

The five-time national champion Lancer women’s basketball team will raise its 2015 Canadian Interuniversity Sport title banner into the rafters tonight—Wednesday, November 4. Members of last year’s squad will also collect their championship rings prior to the start of this year’s campaign, with tip-off at 6 p.m. against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The roster features a number of new faces joining veterans Andrea Kiss, Caitlyn Longmuir, Emily Prevost, Cheyanne Roger and Carly Steer. Coach Chantal Vallée’s team is seeking an unprecedented sixth straight national championship. Read more about each of the eight newcomers at goLancers.ca.

The men’s squad will be under new leadership as head coach Chris Oliver takes a year’s sabbatical; former Lancer all-star Ryan Steer will take over at the helm.

Coming off a strong 2014-15 season that saw Windsor earn its sixth divisional title in 10 years and an Ontario University Athletics silver medal, the blue and gold is aiming for a second consecutive berth to the CIS championship tournament.

The men will take to the St. Denis Centre court at 8 p.m. Read a season preview.

Scarf sale to signal stance against domestic violence

The Womyn’s Centre is selling purple scarves this month to support the Shine the Light campaign against domestic abuse.

The centre, on the second floor of the CAW Student Centre, is selling regular scarves for $10 each, and infinity scarves for $15—or two for $25. Proceeds benefit Hiatus House, a social service agency offering confidential intervention for families experiencing domestic violence.

In November 2013, shelters across Ontario launched the “Wrapped in Courage” purple scarf campaign, engaging their communities to join in raising the profile of the issue of woman abuse. The purple scarf is a symbol that shows that it takes the strength of an entire community to end violence against women.

Programming competition a “proud moment” for School of Computer Science

With a finish in the top three province-wide, teams from the University of Windsor enjoyed an outstanding result in the regionals of the International Collegiate Programming Competition, says a local organizer.

“This a very proud moment for the School of Computer Science and UWindsor, a demonstration of high-quality students and programs in software development training that are gaining international recognition,” says Ziad Kobti, director of the school, which hosted 23 teams for the competition under the aegis of the Association for Computing Machinery.

The Windsor blue team placed 18th of 130 in the region. Overall, the top three Ontario universities were Waterloo, Toronto and Windsor.

Dr. Kobti says winners will receive individual recognition at the school’s awards ceremony later this year.
