Speaker to discuss innovations in safe mobility

A multi-disciplinary expert on developing products to aid in rehabilitation will deliver a free public lecture entitled “Innovative Technology to Maintain Safe Mobility as We Age,” Friday as part of the Faculty of Human Kinetics’ Distinguished Speakers Series.

Geoff Fernie, the director of research at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network, holds a primary appointment at the University of Toronto as professor in the Department of Surgery with cross appointments that include the departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, as well as the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering.

He has led the creation of the most advanced product development and testing environment in rehabilitation technology in the world. He has a track record of taking inventions from the laboratory and making them available on the market. Dr. Fernie currently has eight commercialized products and four in clinical trials, and has helped to launch several companies.

His awards for achievement in improving the lives of people with disabilities include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the inaugural Honourable David C. Onley Award and a career award from the Canadian Society for Biomechanics.

His UWindsor appearance is set for noon in room 145, Human Kinetics Building.
