Lancer grads to grace Canadian athletics roster

Two UWindsor alumnae are among the 56 athletes who will represent Canada on the track at the 2013 Summer Universiade, July 7 to12 in Kazan, Russia.

Melissa Bishop (BHK 2010, B.Ed 2011) and Noelle Montcalm (BScN 2012) will suit up in the red and white; Bishop will run the 800-metre event, while Montcalm will compete in the 400-metre hurdles.

Nursing professor receives "jewel" of faculty research awards

A nursing professor who focuses her attention on improving heart health was recently presented with “the jewel” of awards that recognize top researchers in her faculty.

Susan Fox-Wasylyshyn, the faculty’s acting associate dean was given the Faculty of Nursing 2013 Research Excellence Award at an event held May 16 in the McPherson Lounge at Alumni Hall.

Hundreds enjoy close encounters of the scientific kind

The wonders of science were on display Saturday to hundreds of visitors attending Science Rendezvous at the CAW Student Centre. Volunteer presenters organized activities and exhibits in a range of disciplines, from chemistry, physics and biology to computer science, astronomy, forensics and engineering.

Windsor was one of a number of sites across Canada participating in the festival, showcasing world-class research happening at the nation’s universities and other institutions.

Technology day presentation to include tour of nursing simulation centre

A tour of the simulation spaces in the Medical Education Building and Toldo Health Education Centre is one of the highlights of Campus Technology Day, Thursday, May 16.

Nursing instructors Judy Bornais and Debbie Rickeard will guide participants through the faculty’s Simulation Centre, which offers students authentic simulated learning experiences so they can apply theory to practice and learn to safely care for future patients.

His experience in the simulation labs as a UWindsor nursing student helped Andrew Peltier land his dream job. Even before his June Convocation, the fourth-year student will take up a position in the emergency department of North York General Hospital.

He said the scenario-based job interview was not much different from what he did in the Faculty of Nursing labs.

Two-time winner earns provincial recognition for mentoring student nurses

Peer education is the most effective form of health promotion, says Judi Wilson, which is why she feels student nurses working with her are the backbone of the program.

“I am fortunate that the Faculty of Nursing can send students to work with me,” says Wilson, health promotion nurse in Student Health Services. “I don’t know how my office could function without them.”
