DailyNews got it wrong — or at least not completely right.
A story Friday about several alumnae finishing among the finalists for the bpNichol Chapbook Award overlooked the news that the winner — Chuqiao Teresa Yang, author of Reunions in the Year of the Sheep — is also a UWindsor grad (JD 2016).
She received a $4,000 prize at the Toronto Small Press Fair. The award, administered by the Toronto-based Meet the Presses collective, has been made annually since 1986.
Judges Gillian Sze and Billy-Ray Belcourt said Yang’s poetry boasts a voice that astonishes and shines with wisdom and intimacy.
“Yang’s speakers struggle with the old culture and the new, duty and independence, familial expectation and self-determination,” they wrote in a citation. “Her language leaps effortlessly between Chinese culture, classical mythology, and personal history.”
UWindsor alumna Hollie Adams (BA 2008, MA 2010) was a finalist for her chapbook published by Zed Press, a Windsor-based press founded by several graduates of the University’s creative writing program.
