Environment Canada’s senior climatologist David Phillips (BA 1966) will educate and entertain the community on March 26 at the Faculty of Science evening event, “Science on Tap: Cloudy with a chance of beer.”
Phillips will explore Windsor’s weather past, present, and future by weaving tales from historic events, touching on the recent extreme flooding events that have wreaked havoc on local homes and businesses, and delving into how climate change will likely shape the region’s weather future.
“The way Windsor is geographically situated has led to some uncommon weather occurrences and we can expect that the future won’t be our grandparent’s weather,” says Phillips. “But the more we adapt and prepare for the changing climate, the better off we will be. I predict that Windsor will still be the weather capital of Canada.”
Phillips is the author of several best-selling books, including The Climates of Canada, Blame It on the Weather, and The Day Niagara Falls Ran Dry. He is also the creator of Canada’s most popular calendar, The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar.
In addition to his address, the March 26 event promises weather trivia, exhibits from UWindsor’s Science Meets Art (SMArt) initiative, and a soon-to-be-announced citizen science project involving a partnership between the Faculty of Science and the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
There will also be displays highlighting the environmental research being conducted at UWindsor, from water and air quality, to the history beneath our feet.
The event is part of Science on Tap, a series of outreach activities to encourage members of the community to come and meet UWindsor researchers and get a glimpse into the research happening on campus.
The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Walkerville Brewery, 525 Argyle Road. Tickets are $10 and are available through Snapd Windsor.
