Short-form Video as multimodal discourse for arguing in a global context

Abstract: With the international situation changing from globalization to one featuring increased polarization and disagreement, there is skepticism about the possibility of any practice aiming at resolving disagreements and conflicts through an exchange of good reasons across the boundaries of ideologically or culturally different regions. Starting from this, the talk considers the necessity of attaching more importance to current discursive practices for arguing in a global context. Since short-form video has emerged as one of the most dominant trends in the digital media environment we are living in, the power of its content and its influence on people and society cannot be overlooked. Thus, the talk will focus on the phenomena and practices of adopting short-form video to convey arguments in a global context from the perspective of multimodal rhetoric. Based on specific case studies, the talk takes a closer look at the effects and problems of those video clips via argumentative analysis and evaluation, and tries to work out some principles for arguers to make a reasonable argument and enhance the rhetorical effectiveness of short-form videos.
