Etiquette, Exigency, and Red Wine: Mejía and Groarke on Arguing by Taste
Abstract: In this presentation, I explore two recent attempts to incorporate acts of tasting wine in argument construction, reconstruction, and evaluation: Daniel Mejía’s “Does Taste Count as Evidence in Argumentation?” and Leo Groarke’s “Going Multimodal: What is a Mode of Arguing and Why Does it Matter?” Both essays rely on hypothetical examples of arguing over wine in order to challenge reductive definitions of ‘arguments’ as sets of propositions designed to establish true conclusions. In doing so, they gesture towards a more expansive, inclusive conception of argumentation. I hope to contribute to this work by highlighting common misunderstandings that arise throughout wine service and exposing attendant risks and rewards of arguing, over wine, with guests. Trivial though they may appear, I believe that disagreements about wine illuminate the stakes of ‘arguing by taste’ generally.
