Situations and Their Limits

Abstract: Different situations pertain directly to our interest in argumentation theory. J.L. Austin tells us the total speech situation is the only thing which, in the last resort, we should be interested in elucidating. While Llyod Bitzer, in offering a “part of a theory of situation,” heralds the rhetorical situation as a productive space in which exigencies are addressed by discourse. And various scholars depict the situation of argumentation as a synonym for context, welcoming the attention it receives without really suggesting what it might involve. What might these situations have in common? And what might be the limit (the total) of a situation in each case? These are the questions explored in this talk.
