- An ITEC medium-duty V6 diesel engine is modified to run in a single-cylinder mode with variable valve actuation (VVA) and coupled with an eddy current dynamometer.
- One bank of the V6 has the research cylinder with VVA (image below), and the other bank has the motoring cylinder operating under conventional diesel combustion.
-
Sturman Hydraulically-actuated Valve (HVA), Variable-Valve-Timing (VVT) control platform is on the single-research cylinder to test combustion control strategies by changing open/close timing of Intake and Exhaust valves, compression ratio and prompt EGR control.
- Each one of the four valves (two intake and two exhaust valves) of the research cylinde can be controlled independently for timing and lift, and can be opened twice every engine cycle. The research control program is custom-made in the lab with LabVIEW.
