Yanmar Single Cylinder Research Engine

  • The Yanmar engine was highly-customized from a production diesel engine for combustion research.
  • The two-valve design facilitates modification of the cylinder head for additional instrumentation such as in-cylinder direct gas sampling, custom spark plug mounting/testing for assisted spark ignition, and a custom common-rail for dual fuel strategies.
  • Customized pistons can be used for alternative fuel research (DME, Propane, Butane, gasoline).
  • Research conducted on this engine includes
    • application of novel spark ignition strategies
    • air motion enhancement tests
    • flame ion current measurement
    • NOx generation mechanism study by dosing Nitrogen Oxide (NO) into the cylinder
    • post-injection, supplimental fuel inejction,  and EGR-catalytic reforming
  • The in-cylinder direct gas sampling valve with Cambustion fast gas analyzers have been used together to perform detailed analysis of the combustion process in time-resolved or crank-angle resolved.
  • Typical tested fuels on this engine include ethanol, gasoline, and dimethyl ether (DME).
