Particulate matter (PM) is one of the major pollutants produced in diesel engines due to the essentially diffusion type of combustion. Measurement equipment based on different working principles are used to measure different aspects of PM emissions. The AVL smoke meter measures PM emission by reading filter paper reflectance. The Horiba particle counter counts the number of particles in the exhaust gas. The Horiba PM analyzer quantifies PM components such as soluble organic fraction (SOF), dry soot, and sulfates, which are collected on quartz filters. The Horiba PM analyzers are used with a Horiba micro dilution tunnel.
