As we approach the halfway mark of Advent, I find myself increasingly thinking of Mother Mary. As someone who was due to be born on Christmas Eve, not a year goes by where I don’t hear my Mom talk about how much she identified with Mary that Christmas as she waited for me to born.
This week marks both the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe, with a lot of music inspired by Mary. You can find the full Spotify playlist here, but here are a few of my favourites:
- A Baby Changes Everything by Abby Neves
This local Windsor singer released a Christmas album in 2015 and it’s one of the favourites in my household. This song highlights the journey Mary had as a young girl facing multiple struggles, but keeping her faith in God.
- Be Born in Me by Francesa Battistelli
Something about Francesca’s voice gets me every time with this song. I especially love the lyrics, “I’m just a girl, nothing more. I am willing, I am Yours.”
- Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant
Perhaps one of the best chorus’ to pray along with, the almost haunting instrumentals in the background followed by the softness wraps you in the comfort of Mary’s love.
- Ave Maria by Celine Dion
This song brings me back to listening to music in Mass and just embracing the musicality of the words in their original Latin. Celine Dion’s crystal clear voice makes it all the more special.
