Getting Spiritually Healthy

On September 26 Campus Ministry participated in the University of Windsor Health Fair. We're always happy to be at that event to talk about spiritual health. We know all about physical health, and there is a lot of talk and support for mental health. But as humans, we are body, mind, and spirit and so we must care for our spiritual health as well. But what does that mean?

What is Spiritual Health?

Think of health as a lightbulb. Our spiritual lightbulb needs power to sustain it. To be the best form of ourselves we need to connect to a power bigger than ourselves. From a Christian perspective, this higher power is God. It is from God that we gain the power to light up our lightbulbs. This is true for many religions and faith perspectives as well.

What powers your spiritual lightbulb?

How to improve your spiritual health?

  1. Prayer or Meditation – Prayer and meditation is like a basic gym trip for the body. This is the way we connect to our power source, God, to get the power we need to light our lightbulbs.
  2. Silence – In our busy world we don’t experience a lot of silence. It is in quiet times that we can best reflect and ponder life’s big questions.
  3. Service – There’s no sense in lighting a lightbulb if we keep it covered. One of the best ways to exercise our spiritual selves is to give back to others in need.
  4. Community – Find a group of like-minded people. For Christians this will likely be found in a church community. If you practice a different religion, perhaps for you community si found at a Synagogue or Mosque. Maybe on campus it’s a student club. Wherever it is, humans are community beings - so find yours!
  5. Find answers – For many people, spiritual lives are fed through a faith life or religion. During your time as a student you may have questions about religion or aspects of the spiritual life. Find someone to answer your questions.
