Alum Profile: Adrian DeBiasio

Adrian DeBiasio outside the Ontario Veterinary College

My name is Adrian DeBiasio and I am an alumni of the Interdisciplinary Arts and Science program at the University of Windsor. I graduated from the program in 2019 with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Psychology. My time in the program was an incredible experience of personal and professional growth. I recall experiencing my first Interdisciplinary core course with Dr. Miljan and having my eyes opened to what an interdisciplinary mindset required. I progressed through the academic stream eager to learn tactics and higher-level approaches to solving real-world issues, while gaining a better understanding of the ethical implications that one’s actions can have on parties they interact with. This desire to learn and apply my knowledge led to me joining two lab groups on the University campus. My first experience in a lab came in the form of Dr. Rawson’s inorganic chemistry lab. This challenged my initial conceptions of what it took to think with an analytical mindset, while also being flexible in the face of adversity (as my experimental results did not always yield what was desired). In Dr. Love’s integrative ecology lab, I was able to see research in motion while working with developing chinook salmon and how changes in water temperature could affect their growth.

While my time working in lab was incredibly rewarding, I felt most accomplished when I was acting as a mentor for other students in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Science program. After 1st year, I applied myself towards the mentorship program that was run in association with the Bachelor of Arts and Science Association. In this position, I was honored to work with members of my program who exemplified the attributes that allowed them to be so high achieving, while still recognizing the importance of interpersonal skills. These experiences have allowed me to expand my own skillset and have led me to my current academic endeavor of veterinary school. I am currently studying at the Ontario Veterinary College and have already been able to incorporate what I learned throughout my time in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Science program into how I approach both medical and client-centered situations.
